Mars002, Mute & Mako

Inspired by the soul and groove vibe found in the 90’s, label Mars hopes to re-establish ‘a sound almost forgotten’ in Drum & Bass. Mars002 comes with Mute and Mako on a double-edged roller. A-side ‘Essential Form’s keeps it bouncy with some smooth vocal stabs whilst the flip ‘Who Knows’ keeps the percussion tight with some punchy beats backed with a soulful energy perfect for the dancefloor.

Also celebrating 2 years in the game, Mako and his label Utopia Music offer up a free D&B stepper. A slice of future beats served up with some crisp drums and a side of twisted funk. Grab this while you can.

Hectic – Is This The End? EP

Four humungous tracks full of dark synths, cold drums and vicious sub bass. The four tracks range in style and contain elements of dubstep, 2-step garage and house.

We became aware of this guy after listening to Blynk’s remix of ‘You Got Me’ (featured on this weeks show). Pushed by not-for-profit netlabel FWONK, there are some amazing vibes on these four cuts. Dark and funky. Bag it now.

Wachs Lyrical (Regent) – The Long Walk South

“The Long Walk South”, with it’s unique blend of seductive, deep vocals and a non-trivial bassline, is, first of all, a brilliant attempt to think over the UK bass scene outbreak through a prism of the American soul. With 2 other swaggerish solo tracks, a chopped & screwed remix from Kingthing, a halfstep wonder refix from Mista Men and a garage-rave mutant edit from Sentinels, it might seem this release is perfectly balanced to please any audience.

We are deleriously happy this week with the discovery that The Long Walk South is now out as a free release – This is an unbelievable giveaway from eastern european label Wicked Bass Records – perhaps my favourite so far on this blog. Preview all 6 tracks here then grab the DL from mediafire.

Eliphino – More Than Me EP

Following on from realeases on Manchester based Hoya Hoya and Giles Peterson’s Brownswood label, London based producer/dj – Eliphino – has found his finest form to date with this new EP ‘More Than Me’. Low down, deep and dirty house music for the clubs, released on limited edition vinyl via somethinksounds on Oct 31st. The full EP features three low slung dancefloor bangers – ‘More Than Me’, ‘Devoted’ and ‘I-Played’ – fuzzy, warm and atmospheric. Eliphino switches up the style but never fails to dazzle.

The hype has been building for the past 3 months for this, Eliphino’s most recent release on Some Think Records. The vaguely anthemic title track sets us up nicely for the late night club vibes on I Played and the deep yet catchy 2step flavours of the final track Devoted which features on this weeks show. One for the bag which will be rocking many a club dancefloor for months to come. Preview below, then buy.

Skittles – Dot2Dot

Following on from Broke’N’English’s recent Umbro bursary, their versatile imprint Estate Recordings is back in business. Luckily for you, us and any other fan of upfront music, their first release is Mancunian wordsmith Skittles newest cut. Out on the 7th November, Dot2Dot is already on Radio 1 rotation and gaining airplay from Mary Anne Hobbs amongst others. Put simply, its a banger and with the release featuring remixes from Zed Bias, Dub Phizix and Joe Kalius its as fresh as you can get. Beats and lyrics come as good as it gets. Essential listening.

One Guy Called Skittles

Janner

Janner first started making music in 1998 in Manchester whilst he was here at uni using a Roland SP-808 hard disk recorder/sampler to make drum and bass. He had his first release under the name Static on Moving Shadow. After tiring of the DNB side he moved on to Hip Hop and Breaks, but by 2005 the burdgeoning Dubstep scene had inspired Janner to experiment with half step beats and that led to his first 140bpm release in 2006.

His versatile range of styles and structures stand out here on tracks like the brilliantly named Deimos – the second moon of Mars and also memorable to us for featuring in the legendary PC game DOOM.

Check the bass line on his 2step track Proteus, out now on Jemenfish Records.

These days he’s making beats at all bpm’s. Check his most recent unreleased cut Masada, featured on this weeks show.

MASADA

Listen and buy tracks from his available back catalogue here on Juno. We are hoping the record labels wake up and more releases will be available soon..
