Arkaik – Cutting Edge EP | DIFF015

dub arkaik3 Big fans of the Diffrent label here at
Robot Bodypop. The label bosses seem
to have a clear view of what they want to put out and whilst it may
be indulgent, the quality is always there. In their own words;
“We believe theres a lot of soul-less D&B music
out there due to labels having to put out music that “HAS” to sell.
Ultimately we’re about making music fun, trying new things
& putting out music that we truly love!’ – Hunchbak
& Dexta
The title track ‘Cutting
Edge’
opens the release off with its steppy breaks
and chopped vocal stabs. It doesn’t build so much as hit you in the
face from the off. ‘Lost’ opens with
some haunting synth’s and draws you in before the crisp break
drives through the cold vibes Diffrent
is known for before it peaks into a breakdown that
runs with piano licks and twisted electronica. Followed by personal
favourite ‘Game Changer’ it builds
slowly before the lyrics force a key change and the bass wraps
around the vocals interspersed with killer soundbites. Badness
‘Serrated’ works on the low end right
the way through. Its a deep track. One for the heads. A strong release and out to
pick up now at Juno Records and all decent online
retailers.

Dub Motion – Lucifer / Red Stripe

Regal Records returns maintaining the ethos of promoting fresh dance music from up and coming producers. This cut, the ninth release so far, sees South London’s Dub Motion at the controls with ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Red Stripe’. Two serious tunes which have already been gaining appreciation on the dancefloor and both tracks featured on the recent S.P.Y. Hospital podcast. Theres plenty of support in the scene too from the likes of Logistics, Cyantific, London Elektricity, Nu:Tone & Random Concept. Each track leans towards the darker side of D&B but each showing that Dub Motion has a great deal to offer the scene.

Available to pick up on 12th November from Juno Download

Tuned In Two

Total Science
presents the follow up the now classic seminal compilation album that encapsulated their vision of d&b way back in 2001. ‘Tuned In’ included the cream of the crop & the bright new stars of that era & now after over 10 years they’ve decided the time is right to do it again, piecing together a selection of their favourite artists including some newcomers. These tracks define the CIA sound, label and their definition of d&b as they feel it now & for years to come.

“Trends and fashions come and go within all the dance music genres but even after all this time there is still an underlying straight up timeless Drum & Bass sound & quality we feel & can’t be ignored which needs to be pushed forward and presented as a collection”

‘Tuned In’
featured the best of old skool new skool & unheard artists & thats the theory behind this album too, Calibre & Spirit even appeared on the first incarnation. ‘Tuned In 2’ features once again the cream of the crop & bright new stars of the future , Are you Tuned In ?

Robot Bodypop 18.08.12 – 1st Birthday Edition

artwork by Brian Despain

One year since it’s immaculate conception, Robot Bodypop pull out all the stops to bring you a fitting celebration to end a great first year of podcasting. We have been very lucky to host and interview some amazing acts in our ongoing Transmit mix series and we hope to build on that into 2013. We are massively appreciative of our listeners, friends, relatives, producers, artists, labels and promoters that have helped and supported us along the way. To show how humble we are, we have stitched together an hour long back to back mix of some of our keenest selections to date for free download. Check the First Annuary Podcast feature below.

As for the show itself, 1nejack opens on the deep and emotional side of things with artists like Purity Ring, Maribou and 123MRK all gracing the playlist. Killian comes in a dutty dancefloor style – Major Lazer, Strategy and eccentric reggae don Lee Scratch Perry get a good rotation in his half of the show, but that’s not before we bring out this fortnight’s Survivor. Clear out your ears, open your mind and enjoy.

Stray ft. Halogenix – Warm 022

Warm Communications have featured heavily on the Robot Bodypop, not least because of the diversity on the label. Their latest release with Stray ft. Halogenix on the new double A-side has been making waves within the D&B scene. No surprise because this release is indicative of producers wanting to try new things. ‘The Pursuit’ is a blend of ridiculously tight percussion & groove bass interspersed with sweet amens and smooth atmospherics. Made me feel like a getaway driver.
On the flip is the track that made it onto the Robot Bodypop show this week. Stray teaming up with Halogenix goes by the name ‘Poison’. Builds up with smooth pads before literally attacking your beat judgement with some work I’ve never heard anywhere else. I’m still trying to get my head round it so I’m gonna stop trying to describe how much I love the vocal cut over the skippy riddim and leave you to listen yourself.

Not been this excited about a single in a while purely for what it might do for other producers. Bag this on the 16th July and beyond.

Free Beats

As always we’ve sent out the bot to scour the interweb for the finest in free and legal downloads to shake your speakers. Or headphones if they aren’t them crap free ones.

First up is a young producer from Hungary, goes by the name of LeAp. A few free tracks there on his Soundcloud but it was ‘Main Stream’ that caught the bots ear chip. A deep electronic track with a sweet vocal and the bass ripples under the tight percussion while the beat switches throughout.

One again the FatKid delivers. Made available through the website which has become an important source for bass music fans everywhere. Big fans of Ghost Note and the Kiwi superproducer returns with yet another free EP. 4 tracks in there with ‘Transmission’ making the Robot Bodypop show set list this week but it wasn’t an easy selection as the other 3 tracks are just as lush. Smooth builds and deep drops a plenty as Ghost Note further finely tunes his sound.

Ghost Note

1nejack features 2 freebies in his set this week, the first of which is an evocative garage piece from remixer and fully competent track smasher Enigma Dubz, titled ‘We At War’ sampling Kanye West‘s ‘Jesus Walks’. It’s a great track – well worth the click for the 320.

Lastly we have an off key grime riddim from Whyrez. This one has a bit of a old school Humphrey Bogart detective theme to it. Think 1940’s 12HP Rover saloons with trenchcoated hoodlums toting tommy guns hanging off the wings, shouting ‘oi blad!!’ to passers by. Or just listen, like, download and share.
