Big fans of the Diffrent label here at
Robot Bodypop. The label bosses seem
to have a clear view of what they want to put out and whilst it may
be indulgent, the quality is always there. In their own words;
“We believe theres a lot of soul-less D&B music
out there due to labels having to put out music that “HAS” to sell.
Ultimately we’re about making music fun, trying new things
& putting out music that we truly love!’ – Hunchbak
& Dexta The title track ‘Cutting
Edge’ opens the release off with its steppy breaks
and chopped vocal stabs. It doesn’t build so much as hit you in the
face from the off. ‘Lost’ opens with
some haunting synth’s and draws you in before the crisp break
drives through the cold vibes Diffrent
is known for before it peaks into a breakdown that
runs with piano licks and twisted electronica. Followed by personal
favourite ‘Game Changer’ it builds
slowly before the lyrics force a key change and the bass wraps
around the vocals interspersed with killer soundbites. Badness
‘Serrated’ works on the low end right
the way through. Its a deep track. One for the heads. A strong release and out to
pick up now at Juno Records and all decent online
retailers.

Hocus Pocus
Record labels are cropping up in abundance these days but you shouldn’t be excited about many more than new imprint Hocus Pocus. The label comes from the minds of Manchester based D&B producer combo Dawn Raid who are responsible for some of the more dedicated and true to form releases of the last few years with tracks appearing exclusively on DJ Vapours‘ 36 Hertz label.
In the words of Dawn Raid’s ADT & Kingsize, they are trying to create a sound that they felt was missing from modern D&B. This is staggeringly apparent in their string of singles and collaborations, most notably with Callide and Bladerunner.
Anyone lucky enough to catch these guys playing out will agree that their selection kills it but that’s no accident. These guys are committed to representing what they feel is the more core sound right across the jungle spectrum and their influences shine through with the rollers they effortlessly blend whilst retaining the musical aspect throughout.
The roots are deeply layed for Dawn Raid to add another aspect to their already solid base and Hocus Pocus promises to do just that. The first single, Hocus Pocus 001, will feature jungle don Bladerunner on production duties and their links to an untold amount of creative and forward thinking musicians only whets the appetite for further releases.
The energy from these two for the future and what they can do for the scene with the label is exciting not least because of the sound they plan to push but because it opens themselves up to getting their own unmistakable sound out there and serve them justice. A product of hard and meticlous studio work. Keep an eye out for http://www.hpocus.co.uk which is set to go live shortly with some goodies for you to pick up
In the meantime console yourself with having to wait for the project to kick off with Dawn Raids most recent studio mix. Its a badman selection.

Kid Koala – 12 Bit Blues
This one is a concept album after my own heart. Digging in the crates for old school blues legends like Son House, Vancouver-born Kid Koala combines turntablism and glitched lo-fi production with the lumbering guitar and piano riffs of the 12 bar blues, creating something epic.
‘The 12 Bit Blues’ is out now on Ninja Tune. He’s also about to begin a world tour featuring dancers, puppets and a huge cardboard gramaphone(?). Playing Manchester UK on the 13th October.
