The Eyes – Harder

Estate Recordings goes from strength to strength showing that the recent Umbro bursary was well deserved. The new single, their 7th release, drops on the 20th August and it’s a killer.

On the A side it’s the first release from super-producer and selector Chimpo and ridiculously good vocalist Fox. They go by the name of The Eyes and it’s a fantastic mix of talents with each artist going back to the roots of music with the vibes on this plate. Both tracks found their way onto the playloist of this weeks Robot Bodypop radio show.

‘Harder’ is a reggae anthem with a hook, which should have people singing throughout the summer. On the flip you have ‘Come Again’ which switches up the vibes with a dancehall riddim this time featuring Strategy found recently rocking speakers worldwide with ‘Marka’

Talented video work from Joe Gavin once again. Really excited to see whats next from both Estate Recordings and The Eyes.

ECID – Swagger Wagon

Anyone who listens to the Robot Bodypop show knows we always like to throw in something completely different. Persuing Bandcamp led me to ECID and it was immediately apprent this was what I was looking for. ‘Swagger Wagon’ is a 6 track freebie with 3 vocal tracks and then the same 3 instrumentals. The title track featuring Derrill Pounds & Leif sits somewhere between several bass heavy genres. Coupled with a vocal with that wraps around the sounds and doesnt for one moment take a back seat to the music, it gives this production a ridiculously gritty feel. ‘The Future Is Free’ & ‘Tomorrows Astronaut’ features guests David Mars and AWOL respectively. This has been on rotation in the car for days. Free as well. Unless you want to bung them some $.

The Minneapolis based producer & MC dropped this in 2011 in anticipation for his LP ‘Werewolf Hologram’. His sound can not be contained and in his own words:

“Ecid is the voice to kick a hipster to.”

Octane & DLR – Method… in the Madness

With releases on RunDNB, Audio Tactics and most notably Renegade Hardware and Dispatch Recordings, Octane & DLR are set to drop their long player on the 10th September on Dispatch Recordings. Pushing the limits with their cross-genre vibes has gained them huge support from their peers. Regular radio play comes as a result, as the sound they have spent the last 12 months meticulously carving is ridiculously fresh. The album features mouth watering collabos from Break, Cern and EBK as well as guest vocalists and MC’s Fokus, Kemo, Gusto and Marion.
To whet your appetite catch this preview mix as its absolute FIRE! Just when you thought you’d heard it all before.

Fathom Audio – Promises b/w Ridges (DIFF014)

Big fans of Diffrent Records here at the Robot Bodypop, mostly because each release genuinely stirs something inside leaving us tapping our fingers, nodding our heads or grimacing in pure audio bliss.
The newest plate from the label due out on the 3rd September and Fathom Audio take control for a double A side. Comprising of members Billion, Sense, Codebreaker & Fybe, they keep the vibe deep but the tight production keeps the listener keen.

‘Promises’ eases you in before the stabs of neuro bass carve out the track perfectly with smooth cuts and vocals interweaving.

‘Ridges’ kicks off with a brief invitiation to fly then hits you with a gnarly drum pattern which filters perfectly between elegant and choppy. Love it.

Bag it. Spetember 3rd.

Chimpo – 2KFLLWRS EP

Soundboy killer and all round badman Chimpo gives away this 4 track EP featuring a track I’ve been hassling him for for the best part of 2 years. Appropriately titled ‘2KFLLWRS EP’ after hitting the 2000 followers of his Twitter page, the selection includes 2-step vocal cut ‘Just People Step’ which is the highlight for me. A deeper vibe with ‘Freaky Deaky’ and then a remix of a classic with ‘More Bounce’. All topped off with the smooth ‘Me n Cassie’ this is a ridiculously good giveaway. Bag it before all the links disappear.

Mr Beeb – Ambivalence EP | B-Dem Records

Here’s an interesting debut for you – Mr. Beeb has been around for a while honing his skills, and this being his first EP he has based it around the concept of a failed relationship – So far so optimistic.

The skippy opener ‘Girl You Know’ bounces along nicely with softly stabby garage chords and a pleading male vocal. She’s apparently unhappy because he didn’t put enough sugar in her tea, but he wasn’t to know and is wondering why she’s pulled such a strop. In ‘Lost & Found’ the fella realises his mistake and laments the loss of her affections. By the time we reach the gritty ‘Metro’ any efforts to salvage dignity are abandoned and they are at each others throats, presumably in public. By the time we hit the dramatic conclusion on ‘Goin’ 747′ she has completely lost the plot with him and jumped on a plane in a fit of tears. An absolute tragedy!

This is great as a concept release, well realised and skilfully assembled. Just don’t expect to hear 4 party tracks here. This EP is probably best listened to drunk and alone as you put your ex’s stuff up on freecycle.
