The Transmit Sessions Vol.2: Sub & Syncopathic Recordings

ON THIS WEEKS SHOW:

For our second installment in the TRANSMIT series we called on label boss Sub of Syncopathic Recordings. Initially thinking it would be around the 140bpm range, Sub surprised us at Robot Bodypop with a slick mix of 170bpm rollers. Inbetween the deep beats, theres a nod to the original jungle sound in there and quite frankly its awesome.

The label was established in Innsbruk in Austria by Sub in 2007 and they are keen to point out that their sound lies within D&B in its purest form. Building soundscapes with complex drums and deep bass alongside detailed attention its a refreshing take on a genre that is finding its feet once again. The atmospheres created reminded me of why D & B gripped so many in its earlier years.

We felt it necessary to grill Sub for a bit on his thoughts about the current music scene – Here’s what he said:

With your label are you going for a particular sound or vibe to represent your artists?

in the beginning of the label, which was 2007, i was only looking for drumfunk/amen artists as you can see when you look at the releases in the first year from artists like sumone, equinox, nebula, macc.. later on i opened my mind for the more minimalistic and glitchy kind of sound with releases by bop & dephecta, hidden paranoid society.. nowadays i am open for pretty much everything deep, doesnt matter which tempo!

How did the label come about? is it something youve wanted from the beginning?

I never had the intention to start a label, but at some point i realized there is so much great music and artists out there that will never see the light of day which kind of frustrated me.. so i decided to try to promote some of this music.. the first idea was to make it a free netlabel, but then i decided to sell the music to be able to provide mastering and artwork for the releases.. also i think most ppl dont worhsip what they dont have to pay for..

Do you feel, being a label owner that you can express yourself more musically as you’re able to put whatever you want out there into the public domain?

I am definetely doing what i want.. lol..

Whats the favourite track in your collection and why?

photek – the rain, bec it represents the essence of dnb and all related genres..

Whats your dream collaboration?

wow, that is hard, there are so many ppl out there i would love to work with.. but if i had to name one i would say robert glasper, that guy is working with harmonies like nobody else at the moment!

Any upcoming producers people should be aware of?

there are great artists popping out of the map every day.. there is this guy from singapore “diphasic” who is doing some brillant stuff! watch out for his release on syncopathic together with “rawst” from poland.. “rawst – medicine (diphasic remix)” is one of my favourite tunes right now – minimalism in perfection (check it in my guestmix).. also i have got a brillant release lined up by a guy called “deeper heightz” from the u.k., his tune “north shore” which will be on his syncopathic ep makes me goosebumps everytime i listen to it (you can find a preview on his soundcloud page)! two guys who are totally killing it right now are “parallel & relapse”, they have got a collaboration album forthcoming on dubkraft which will be a masterpiece in sounddesign and atmosphere!

What influenced you as you moved through drum and bass and into the dubstep scenes?

there are several lp’s that really hit me throughout the years.. “goldie – timeless”, “krust – genetic manipulation”, “photek – modus operandi”.. and in dubstep “burial – burial”, “headhunter – nomad”, “2562 – aerial”.. just to name a few..

If you could remix any track what would it be and why?

photek – the rain, bec it is the essence!!!

Any advice for people setting up their own labels?

not really, i think everybody has to find his own thing.. treat music and ppl with respect, the bigheaded will not stand the test of time..

Whats the biggest animal you can throw over a crossbar?

haha… no idea, but if you give me a capybara i try that one..

Check out the recent and forthcoming release, dig deep into the back catalogue and catch the exclusive mix on this weeks Robot Bodypop show.

The Transmit Sessions Vol.1 : Clueless

ON THIS WEEKS SHOW:

To blast off our TRANSMIT series in style we have invited prolific Norwegian DJ and future beat maker CLUELESS to bring the noise with this funky 45 minute mix of body moving future steppers. With a number of releases on labels such as L2S Recordings and Night Audio we are honored to play host to this formidable talent.

What is your favourite track in this mix and what does it make you think about?

I’d have to go for the first track in the mix, “Mandy” by Palace. It’s a proper 2-step groove, and the bassline is so mean, it borders on the silly.. I picture a couple of big trolls skanking to this in the club, wanting to look mean but deep down everyone knows they’re good-hearted.

How do you feel about DJs becoming more and more acquainted with tools beyond turntables? Is there anything extra you like to take with you for live shows?

It’s all good, the music is what’s important anyway. Myself, when I DJ I’m pretty old-school, I can use cds but I prefer vinyl – there’s really nothing like that tactile feel when playing records.

Name the best venue or location you have played to and why it was so good.

I played at Stealth in Nottingham a couple years ago, warming up for Shackleton on Spam Chop’s Wigflex night. Amazing vibe, the crowd was well into it, and I was pretty stoked to be warming up for one of my heroes..

You have a pretty amazing workrate. What tips can you give to other musicians to keep up the inspiration and stay productive?

Don’t have a life, that takes the focus away. 🙂 And listen to all kinds of music – personally I get a lot of inspiration listening to Indie music; Bon Iver, Arcade Fire etc.. And make music with your heart, not your head.

Whats the largest animal you can throw over a crossbar?

I support animal rights, so I’m not really comfortable with throwing any sort of animal over crossbars. Maybe if you made sure they weren’t harmed, like if they were to land on something soft.. In which case, I reckon I could pull off a sheep maybe, or a small tapir.

Big thanks to you sir for this awesome selection!

Catch CluelessTransmit Mix for the Robot Bodypop in the 2nd half of this weeks show, and you too can learn to skank like well-meaning trolls from the future!

Exclusive : Blynk Interview

If you are a regular listener to the show you will have heard us banging on about a young mancunian producer named Blynk. We’ve played a few of his tracks on previous shows (check the podcasts section) and his productions speak for themselves, but we wanted to hear what the brain behind the beats has got to say for itself. Robot Bodypop conducts an interrogation…

Why the name, Blynk? Are you particularly photosensitive or twitchy?

Haha, neither really. I used to go under a different alias so I was brainstorming some ideas with Conrank (Rankadank Records) and we were changing letters in words and Blynk came up and it stuck!

What was your first musical purchase?

I really can’t remember. I’ve been through many a genre since I was kid so its hard to tell. The oldest CDs i remember buying were 50 Cent and other similar, I was into HipHop as a teenager.

What would you say is the oddest tune in your collection? Describe what it is you like about it.

Not so much a specific tune, but iv got a great album by a guy called Ronald Jenkees. He used to do videos of himself playing keyboard (insanely sick) and he dropped an album. He’s completely mental in so many ways.. You’ll have to check him out an see for yourself!

With so much to choose from in the world of future music right now, name the tune you are most at this moment in time.

This week iv been rinsing a track called ‘Inha’ by a guy called Cutkachi, very sick producer from Switzerland.

Your first live set was in October. How did that go?

It went pretty good. I dropped tracks that I liked and that I wanted people to hear just to see how it went. Although in all fairness the dance floor was dead until an hour or so later. Im playing the same night again in November so I can really judge how people will take my music in clubs. Manchester locals check out Subtitled!

You have remixed a lot of artists. Who’s next in the pipeline?

Well I’m currently working on an album with eViVE Records so thats taking up a lot of time. Other than that i’ve got about 3 or 4 remixes coming out on various labels over the coming months.

What film score would you like to remake and why?

Hmm thats a hard one, maybe a Batman film?

You’re giving away a lot of great music for free. Why do you think there’s differences in attitudes from producers when it comes to gaining financially for the work they have done?

Its a hard one really. I don’t give away as much music anymore because I think people take it for granted and when you have a release coming, they just want it for free. Most  of the music i’ve given away recently has either been remixes of already released tracks or ones from competitions. Its nice to give stuff out though, its built my fan base nicely over the past year. I can understand why some producers don’t like doing it. The value of music has decreased so much over the past few years, its hard to sell in the quantities of say 10 years ago.

Finally, the red pill or the blue pill?

Blue, I like blue.

Watch out for the new album and check Blynk out at the next Subtitled bash.
