Distinction : /mikst#1/ : FREE DOWNLOAD

About a month ago we featured a huge sounding Usher remix  from London based Producer/DJ Distinction. He also recently smashed the main room of the legendary Fabric club at the Dub Police night there at the end of August. It was that set that inspired  the first instalment in a new series of mixes.

/mikst#1/ is what DJing is all about, or should be. We are treated to a wealth of bass exploring early Dubstep stylings, Hip Hop, Grime and Trap beats perfectly melded together in an interesting and varied set, featuring a wide selection of artists from all corners such as Baauer, XXYYXX, Girl Unit, TNGHT, Redlight, Darq E Freaker, Matty G, and Diplo on the playlist.

There’s more to come from Distinction in the near future too:

Having started to experiment outside the confines of any particular genre, Distinction’s recent releases have sided more towards the influence of R&B music on his production, having released his massive ‘Swim Good’ and ‘Climax’ Refix’s, which have received support online from sites like Hypetrak, StupidDOPE and SB.TV amongst others. The tracks have caused quite a stir online & are set to appear on his highly anticipated RVST mixtape, which is to be released in the near future.

Here’s the full /Mixst#1/ mix for free stream and download including full tracklist. Go grab it.

Silent Dust – NSY004 | None60 Recordings

Our favorite paragons of deep, dark and minimal drum and bass are back with a fresh batch of releases for their resident label None60 this September.

The first of these, catalogued NSY004, is a two track voyage through an epic galaxy of futuristic hip hop and breakbeat. ‘Martyrs’ is breath-snatchingly deep with spaced out samples that bounce off into the ether as the track gradually builds and develops to an epic conclusion. The flip – ‘Population Me’ – is a warm and twisting future hip hop head nodder which features the rythmic poetry of US lyricist Selfsays.

Thankfully Silent Dust are not the types to employ generic production tricks to pull you in – Their compositions have a tempered style and graceful execution that will have your head moving before you even know it yourself. No jarring drops or maximised-to-the-limit repetitive drum programming here, thankyou. Subtlety is key. They skilfully tease your ears until you are ready for the climax, which never fails to satisfy. And there is more to come; Keep your eyes on Robot Bodypop for further releases!

Transmit Sessions Vol 5 | REKchampa

ON THIS WEEK’S SHOW:

Imagine a sound comprised from the various elements of US Hip Hop and UK bass music – a hybrid unlike anything heard before yet one which sounds uncannily familiar. Well you need imagine no longer as that is what Stefan Ringer aka REKchampa delivers. His excellent debut album ‘Pocket The Rest’ is out now on San Francisco based Two Circles Records and he has a number of tunes knocking about on  a name your price basis which you really ought to take a listen to.

He is part of an emerging underground scene in the Atlanta area alongside artists such as P VillaTime Wharp, heRobust, Ethereal and Divine Interface. These up and coming artists represent a brand new direction for bass music that people are gradually paying more and more attention to, and whilst the big money currently flows elsewhere this fledgeling scene comes from strong foundations and will continue to grow.

REKchampa kindly took time out to talk to us; Here is what he had to say.

We can definitely hear UK garage influences in your music as well as home-grown hip hop vibes. Which artists from these scenes did you listen to as you came up? Is there anybody in particular you would like to pay homage to for influencing your style?

I enjoyed listening to Timbaland when I was younger..the tracks he made back then are some of my favorites. as I got older I started going into electronic genres..I really enjoyed listening to jungle.. Remark, Ray Keith, Tom and Jerry, ShyFx..

Nice! We are pleased to see that your mix is made up entirely of your own tracks. Is this your blueprint for playing out? What kind of venues have you played to so far and where did you get the best reception?

When asked, I’ll get together an ableton set and play out that way.. But I get a few dj’ing gigs around the city.. Ive played at mostly bars, lounges, medium-sized venues… I like this spot in East Atlanta called 529 they play many different styles of music.. I played there my first time ever doing an ableton set performance… The place was smaller at that time but the crowd was there.. Everyone seemed to be really feeling the set.. The vibe was dope.. All love..

We’ve seen you say that you are trying to get out of the habit of using vocal samples in your beats. Will you produce purely instrumental tracks from now on or are there any vocalists you are planning to write songs with?

I’d say that right now, I am still trying to get away from using vocal samples. I’ve been recording my own voice a bit recently. I have made a few tracks that are purely instrumental. I wouldn’t mind working with a vocalist. I have before.. I would want the vocalist to be experienced in writing lyrics.

We would love to host a show for you here in Manchester. Are there any long term plans to tour in the UK?

I would definitely like to do that..But I would have no idea of how to get something like that together.. I’m novice to touring and things of that nature..I would love to come out there though..

We’ll see what we can do.. Finally, what’s the largest animal you can throw over a crossbar?

Tasmanian tiger.

We would like to thank you for this incredible mix, and we wish you great success for the future!

Paper Tiger – Send Me

As promised a couple weeks back we have a brand new release from Paper Tiger hitting our playlist. This 3 track EP is typically eclectic for the group, whose influences include reggae, garage, glitch and hip hop. ‘Send Me’ has cutty 2 step vibes, with a nice sampled vocal and a funky rhythm track. There are 2 versions on this cut, track 3 being the live version, all recorded in one take with no overdubs. ‘Ask Me How I Am’ is a the tripped out B-Side with a deeper vibe. These are some accomplished live performers and I will keep emphasising this – GO AND SEE THEM LIVE!!! This will be your next opportunity;

Hootananny, LONDON
Jan 7, 2012 9:00 pm @ Wormfood! Brixton, FREE entry!’

Keep an eye on their website www.papertigerband.co.uk for news of more bookings. We are assured there are plenty of dates in the pipeline.

You can preview all three tracks off this new release below – Plus the digital release is exclusively available to buy on Juno all week. Cop it!

Paper Tiger – Worldwide Takeover EP

You’ll have to excuse us for sleeping on this one a little while. We have been fans of Paper Tiger for well over 2 years now since catching a couple of their live shows in Manchester, and somehow this debut EP had escaped our attention until last month when it was uploaded to soundcloud.

Apologies aside, these guys are something a bit special. A future hip-hop and dubstep crew hailing from Leeds, Paper Tiger fuse electronic beats and synthesisers with live instrumentation, at times laced with the lyrical talents of MC Raphael Attar.

Grab one of the last few CD’s available of their debut EP via bandcamp before they are all gone forever!

Also you can grab a free download of the title track remixed by BUG right here.

We will be keeping you updated on their forthcoming work so stay locked to the show and the blog in coming weeks.
