Geiom – Black Screen | Frisjfo Beats

From long time RBP favourite Geiom comes “Black Screen”, an inspirational new album out on the renowned Future Garage label Frisjfo Beats. Having heard little from him in recent times and knowing the skill of the man on the buttons we were pretty excited to pick this up and get it loaded into the player.

Starting with “Hem – 1 button”, stuttered percussion skips back and forth over the pitched synths nicely displaying the rough, staggered feel which prevails throughout the album. “Pucker Lips” stands out with an infinitesimally sliced flute breaking out over a crisp 2-step riddim.

Later on, 4×4/Bassline vibes push unhinged melodies on “Besk”, and “Adhafera” delves through classic bass synths which bound over a frenetic Drum & Bass beat. Eclectic in it’s scope and twisting each genre to fit, the album shifts direction ceaselessly with each listen bringing new reward – a worthwhile purchase for any bass music enthusiast.

Hocus Pocus

Record labels are cropping up in abundance these days but you shouldn’t be excited about many more than new imprint Hocus Pocus. The label comes from the minds of Manchester based D&B producer combo Dawn Raid who are responsible for some of the more dedicated and true to form releases of the last few years with tracks appearing exclusively on DJ Vapours36 Hertz label.

In the words of Dawn Raid’s ADT & Kingsize, they are trying to create a sound that they felt was missing from modern D&B. This is staggeringly apparent in their string of singles and collaborations, most notably with Callide and Bladerunner.

Anyone lucky enough to catch these guys playing out will agree that their selection kills it but that’s no accident. These guys are committed to representing what they feel is the more core sound right across the jungle spectrum and their influences shine through with the rollers they effortlessly blend whilst retaining the musical aspect throughout.

The roots are deeply layed for Dawn Raid to add another aspect to their already solid base and Hocus Pocus promises to do just that. The first single, Hocus Pocus 001, will feature jungle don Bladerunner on production duties and their links to an untold amount of creative and forward thinking musicians only whets the appetite for further releases.

The energy from these two for the future and what they can do for the scene with the label is exciting not least because of the sound they plan to push but because it opens themselves up to getting their own unmistakable sound out there and serve them justice. A product of hard and meticlous studio work. Keep an eye out for http://www.hpocus.co.uk which is set to go live shortly with some goodies for you to pick up

In the meantime console yourself with having to wait for the project to kick off with Dawn Raids most recent studio mix. Its a badman selection.

Chemical Ally – Imagination of Yourself (Spirit RMX) / Insider

Welshman and Rude FM regular Chemical Ally comes to stage with his own brand new imprint Rooted Recordings. It’s a cut that takes a serious pop at the dancefloor. Kicking off with the Spirit remix of ‘Imagination Of Yourself’ from the man himself and Lady Flava, it’s a roller full of stabs and resonant horns to keep you moving whilst the flip sees Ukranian Fade pick up composer duties. ‘Insider’ sees warping b-lines and a host of spacefunk bleeps and bloops fll up the space before rocking the crisp amen breaks. A serious cut.

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

I dont know about you but
the music I have on rotation often emulates whatever musical bubble
I’m currently floating around in. At the moment I’m going in on
deep hiphop and with sites like Soundclound
and Bandcamp having
search bars I honestly feel I don’t have enough time to explore the
amount of good work out there. Thankfully, however, I stumbled upon
Pawcut from
Germany. Lucky for you and me there’s
free downloads in abundance from this guy and the recent E.P,
The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, is
just that. The beats are broken but still keep the head nodding
while the samples twist up your emotions. It’s both melancholy and
straight vibing. Piano licks are in abundace here and there’s
strings that make you forget you’re listening to hip hop.
Incredible work from such a positive producer. Bag this, it’s
beautiful.

Dub Motion – Lucifer / Red Stripe

Regal Records returns maintaining the ethos of promoting fresh dance music from up and coming producers. This cut, the ninth release so far, sees South London’s Dub Motion at the controls with ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Red Stripe’. Two serious tunes which have already been gaining appreciation on the dancefloor and both tracks featured on the recent S.P.Y. Hospital podcast. Theres plenty of support in the scene too from the likes of Logistics, Cyantific, London Elektricity, Nu:Tone & Random Concept. Each track leans towards the darker side of D&B but each showing that Dub Motion has a great deal to offer the scene.

Tuned In Two

Total Science
presents the follow up the now classic seminal compilation album that encapsulated their vision of d&b way back in 2001. ‘Tuned In’ included the cream of the crop & the bright new stars of that era & now after over 10 years they’ve decided the time is right to do it again, piecing together a selection of their favourite artists including some newcomers. These tracks define the CIA sound, label and their definition of d&b as they feel it now & for years to come.

“Trends and fashions come and go within all the dance music genres but even after all this time there is still an underlying straight up timeless Drum & Bass sound & quality we feel & can’t be ignored which needs to be pushed forward and presented as a collection”

‘Tuned In’
featured the best of old skool new skool & unheard artists & thats the theory behind this album too, Calibre & Spirit even appeared on the first incarnation. ‘Tuned In 2’ features once again the cream of the crop & bright new stars of the future , Are you Tuned In ?
