Burial – Truant/Rough Sleeper | Hyperdub

Yes, Burial is back. This is his first outing since the Kindred EP, which marked a subtle change of stylistics for this elusive producer. As beautifully crafted as ever, these two tracks are as surprising and satisfying as we have come to expect. With no hint or any threat that he is about to start selling out or falling off, I don’t even need to tell you to buy this – most of you will already have made that decision before you even clicked on this page.

Stiver – Hollow EP | Noisy Meditation

October is shaping up to be a great month and our ears have been busy. Istanbul producer Stiver dropped the ‘Hollow EP’ back on the 14th and it’s only now we are getting the chance to give it a proper listen and comment.

Fans will be pleased to hear that deep and meditative 2-step breaks are the staple throughout. ‘Hollow’ is a taut introduction with a steadily building string section and pensive vocal that increases the tension step by step. ‘Paralyzed’ is no less emotive and builds the pace well with filtered organs and cavernous percussion. In ‘Just Friends’ we are given hints of Stiver‘s recording environment with sequestered winds and echoing percussion cinematically alluding to the far away bustle of a large city at night. Finally on ‘Merged’ the desolation is offset by a faint message of hope that rolls out nicely with shifting beats that clink and shuffle over swarming choral harmonies. Masterful work, well worthy of its place in the playlist – check the links below.

Clubroot – S/T (III – MMXII) I LODUBS

Clubroot is without doubt one of the pioneers of the dubstep/future garage scene. His first album recieved wide acclaim, and despite being somewhat dismissively touted as the next Burial (a rather lazy distinction which is too often used) he has proved a staggering musical force in his own right. The ‘S/T’ (self-titled) trilogy culminates in this third release.

The signature sound is there, deep as we have come to expect, with intricate 2step percussion providing movement in the cold and desolate soundscape. Clocking in at just over an hour in total, there are ambient interludes in the form of ‘Ennio’s Eden’ and ‘Murmur Interlude’ and notable highlights in the shape of oddball unsettler ‘Demon Drum’, the haunting vibes of ‘My Kingdom’ and the hard edged step of ‘Garrison’.

All told, this is a great conclusion to a classic series which is sure to take a prominent place in your CD stack or vinyl collection for years to come. Check below for buy links, this one is out on Lodubs via bandcamp. Oh, and you can catch ‘Inviolable’ on this weeks show.

Robot Bodypop 17.2.12

artwork by Rudy-Jan Faber

Love is in the air and we at Robot Bodypop are getting set for some big changes. For one, Killian will soon be welcoming a smaller but even more badman version of himself to the world – so congratulations are in order. We fully expect the next show to be punctuated by infantile screaming and soiled nappies. No change there then.

Also on the next show we will be kicking off with the first of our Transmit Mixes. Norway’s Clueless will be blessing us with a 45 minute mix of funky future steppers. Now that’s big!
